About Ruby Jones

A close up of the face of a white person in a purple wig and sunglasses, wearing red lipstick and smirking. I'm an author and artist specialising in science fiction, fantasy, and horror smut. I like robots and magic and tentacles and butts, among a great many other things. I'm also agender, disabled, and depressed, so my writing reflects a sympathy for outcasts and marginalised people.

In 2012, when I was studying for my PhD, I got sick with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). My health steadily deteriorated, and after graduation I had to leave academia behind. I worked as an editor and proofreader, before moving into marketing, and finally technical writing. But in spring 2020 I caught COVID, and my health got much worse. I stopped work entirely in 2023.

Writing has always been my escape, and as I clung on to working life my creativity spiked. I published my first erotic story, Oviposition; began cleaning up longer works for publication; and I set up a Medium blog, to share updates, short stories, and poetry.

My progress as an indie writer fluctuates with my health, but I keep pressing forward. If you'd like to support me, please sign up to my Patreon, where I produce semi-regular content, including advice for other independent authors.

No generative 'AI', only stories about AI

Despite my love of fictional artifical intelligence, and research interest in computational theory of mind, I have a strong aversion to what is currently being marketed as 'AI'. Which is to say: large language models (LLMs) trained on stolen writing and similar neural nets trained on stolen art, to the overwhelming detriment of our environment, climate, and knowledge ecosystem.

I will never knowingly use such models to generate my stories, writing, or other content. I create all my own covers, using my own artwork or stock images. I assume you read because you want connect with someone else's thoughts and feelings, and that's what I offer. Stories can only happen where minds meet; anything else is just empty words.
